My teaching philosophy is informed by my belief that students can achieve their best results when they are given the space, resources, and security to realize their own learning goals and values. As a teacher of Japanese language and culture, the students I teach have come from a variety of cultural backgrounds and hold diverse interests and reasons for choosing their path of study. Some have lived in Japan or studied Japanese for many years, while others have only been exposed to Japan through popular culture and are eager to learn more; some seek to utilize their language and cross-cultural skills for future careers, while others have not yet determined their paths and seek to expand their horizons. I welcome the opportunity to teach such a wide range of students and position myself as a facilitator rather than an authority on Japan to help them conceptualize and realize their goals independently.
